**Warren G. Harding** won the presidency on a promise of a "return to normalcy" after the upheaval of Wilson's tenure and World War I. He was affable, handsome, and catastrophically poor at choosing advisors — his administration produced the Teapot Dome scandal and remains one of the most corrupt in history. He died in office in 1923, possibly mercifully sparing himself from the scandals about to break.
