William Howard Taft — 27th President (1909–1913)
**William Howard Taft** was the only person to serve as both President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court — and he was much happier as Chief Justice. Weighing over 300 pounds and temperamentally suited to the judiciary, Taft was a competent administrator who actually busted more trusts than Roosevelt but lacked TR's flair for publicity. His presidency was overshadowed by the split with Roosevelt that handed the 1912 election to Wilson.
