Ulysses S. Grant — 18th President (1869–1877)

**Ulysses S. Grant** won the Civil War and then struggled to win the peace. The greatest military strategist of his generation, Grant understood logistics, attrition, and the decisive application of overwhelming force. As president, he fought the KKK, protected Black voting rights in the South, and negotiated peaceful resolution of international disputes — while his administration was plagued by corruption he was too loyal to confront.
