James Buchanan — 15th President (1857–1861)

**James Buchanan** is usually ranked as the worst president in American history. He watched seven states secede, declared secession illegal but also declared he had no power to stop it, and handed Abraham Lincoln a nation in the process of tearing itself apart. He was the most experienced candidate ever elected — Secretary of State, Senator, Ambassador — and the most catastrophic failure.
