Martin Van Buren — 8th President (1837–1841)

**Martin Van Buren** was the first professional politician to become president — a master organizer who built the Democratic Party machine, served as Secretary of State, Vice President, and then President, only to be crushed by the Panic of 1837 (an economic depression he inherited but couldn't escape). Known as "The Little Magician" for his political maneuvering, Van Buren understood party politics, coalition-building, and the machinery of democracy better than any president before him.
