Andrew Jackson — 7th President (1829–1837)
**Andrew Jackson** was the first populist president — a self-made man from the frontier who dismantled the political establishment, destroyed the Second Bank of the United States, survived an assassination attempt (and beat the attacker with his cane), and expanded suffrage to all white men. He was a war hero, a duelist, and a man of volcanic temper and iron will. He also perpetrated the Trail of Tears, one of the worst atrocities in American history.
